Dr. Sharon Tenhundfeld developed the Creative Musician practice method as part of her 2016 doctoral dissertation project and after a decade of observations and collaborations with artists in dance, theatre, and visual art mediums.
As violist, she is a passionate performer and collaborates with varieties of artists in and outside the musical realm. Previous multi-art collaborations have included projects and performances with poets, cartoonists, painters, sculptors, cinematographers, actors, dancers, choreographers, and DJ’s,
As a chamber musician she has collaborated with artists and ensembles such as Yo-Yo Ma, James Buswell, Parker String Quartet, new music ensemble Callithumpian Consort, rock band Jethro Tull, and was the former violist of the Elan String Quartet. Equally at home in the orchestral canon, Dr. Tenhundfeld has held the titled position Principal Viola with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and Civic Orchestra of Chicago and has appeared as guest with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and New World Symphony.
When teaching, Dr. Tenhundfeld draws upon her schooling in the Karen Tuttle Coordination Method, body awareness concepts from yoga and pilates, and regularly incorporates concepts from her Creative Musician practice method in private lessons and classes.
Previously, Dr. Tenhundfeld was viola faculty at New Music School in Chicago and served as teaching assistant to Carol Rodland at New England Conservatory in Boston. She earned bachelor and master of music degrees in viola performance from New England Conservatory as a student of Carol Rodland and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree with Sally Chisholm from the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a Paul Collins Wisconsin Distinguished Fellow. In addition, she holds a Business Certificate in Entrepreneurship from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Business and a Music in Education concentration from New England Conservatory.
Currently, she is on faculty at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh where she teaches Viola and Music Business, performs as part of the Elmwood String Trio, and is a member of the Madison Symphony Orchestra and Madison Opera. She lives in Oshkosh, Wisconsin with her husband Dylan and spirited daughter Sophia.
